ATO Black Swan # 74, First Strike!
First Strike looks at, well, the "first air strike" ever by British naval aircraft. This solitaire game examines the events of Christmas Day, 1914, when float planes were brought near the German port of Cuxhaven on the North Sea coast by the earliest "seaplane tenders" and turned loose. Formally an "air reconnaissance" by planes looking for Zeppelin sheds, they just also happened to be carrying bombs and the rest is history.
By this action, the British naval command also hoped to lure out the German fleet for a more conventional sea battle, and game allows for this and the possibility of having the Royal Navy attacked by German airplanes!
The active player takes on the role of the commander of the British forces, Admiral Jellicoe, and the automata rules govern those of the Imperial German Navy and its supporting air forces (aircraft and Zeppelins). Can you do as well or better?
